Different Types of Flanges and their important applications
Pipe flanges are circular disc shaped fitting, commonly associated with different piping applications, such as maintaining support to different piping system. Some of the different applications, related to flanges are maintaining support to the piping system, creating joints in the pipes, closing the existing pipe lines as well as attaching an additional fitting to the existent pipeline. In the plumbing industry, thus threaded flanges mild steel, threaded flanges alloy steel, threaded flanges carbon steel and threaded flanges stainless steel are of great importance; in order to build and connect plumbing pipeline as well as to reconnect fixtures related to the water supply.
Accordingly, six of the most basic types of flanges can be listed herewith that can be used for variety of pipeline projects:
Slip on flanges
It is one of the most commonly used and basic type of a flange slightly bigger in usual diameter of the pipe. The type of flange is identified to be a slip on to the pipe, further creating tight fitting for better hold and support. These types of flanges are comparatively thinner and have shorter durability as compared to other well preferred flanges. But these types of flanges are identified to be the most cost-effective solution to the current industry fittings.
Similar to the slip-on flanges, threaded flanges are also available in variety of models and material, such as threaded flanges in mild steel, threaded flanges alloy steel, threaded flanges carbon steel and threaded flanges stainless steel, etc. As the name suggest, unlike slip-on flanges these economical versions do not required any welding, once fitted on to the pipe. Thus, one of the biggest benefits of these flanges is that they can be conveniently used with thinner pipes, where welding is dangerous and not advisable.
Socket Weld Pipe flanges
This type of flange is used in piping system that is smaller in size and made up of high pressure system. While attaching with the pipe, these flanges are just slipped over it and attached with the fillet weld to enable smoother passage of gas flow through the same.
Lap Joint Flange
These are similar to the slip-on flanges but are not as preferred as the slip-ons or threaded ones. These systems are used in case of low pressure system.
Welding Neck Flanges
These types of flanges are used in the piping with higher pressure system and can considerably take off the stress out of piping system. The type of flange is associated with a neck that is used for welding; providing more strength and support. The type of flange is identified to be as the low turbulence flange since it increases the flow.
This type of flanges are used in sealing off the piping system and can be incorporated in the system for better access to the flow and stop the same.
